Compiling the running list of songs for your album release

Sequencing album tracks is a bit of a black art, I have not really had much experience of this. I suppose it's having a good feel for all of the songs and making some kind of concept out of it all. i.e. fast song, slow song, sad song, happy song, instrumental versus lyrical, songs that have a common theme, contrasts to spice it up, tracks to introduce and tracks to end with.
A label manager would have plenty of input into this in my experience.
Oh, and then there is the marketing angle, you may not want to release all the best songs at once, and so on.
